Why so many Decaturs?

Why so many Decaturs?

Have you ever noticed that some city or county names are common in many states? Did you then look it up?  Google is an amazing invention. With looking up one search term I found exactly the information I was looking for. I’d contend that Google search algorithms are among the most life and knowledge changing internet age inventions to date. Also in the mix is Wikipedia. But I digress.

So, why are there so many Decaturs?  Because of a Navy War Commander/Hero named Stephen Decatur that lived in the early 19th century for 41 years and died in a dumb duel. He apparently cared about his men a lot and had many significant Naval victories protecting the US during its nascent, vulnerable years after the Revolutionary War.

What are some other common city, town, county, etc. names you can think of? And how long does it take you to find their name-sakes history?

Here they are for Decatur…http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decatur
